Thanks Anne Marie. It's odd coming into work and driving by striking co-workers, who you support. Because I work for CSI: Miami, I have to enter and leave through the back gate even though there are strikers at that gate as well. For an update, word is that the WGA tried to settle Sunday night by taking their request for an increase in DVD revenues off the table. That deal was still refused by the producers. So, it looks like the producers want to try to break these Hollywood unions up. That means this could be a very very long strike.

Bill Simmons has a great podcast all about Madden 08 AND the history of electronic football. It's wonderful.

He and his buddy talk, at length, about the No Fing Way Game. They even said they'd talked to a guy at EA who confirmed that the game is set up to actually do that.

Was always disturbed, though, sometimes by the psychelic stuff they played with. Made me feel uneasy.

There are a couple problems with this video review. The main one you point out is something even I find myself doing sometimes. There are those in video gaming that are so desperate to have video games viewed as a legitimate art or at least something beyond a teenage boy time waster that when a game comes along showing an inkling of original thought or tells a good story they go a little overboard. So a game designer thought what if we make a game where John Gault type character creates an underwater utopia only it's all gone horribly wrong. Throw in decisions that affect more than whether the player lives or dies, and you've created a game that will get these people bustling. Make the game play well both technically and within the genre of the game and you will often get what you have in the video.

Which leads to the second problem of this video and that is the footage. The problem with ambitious or unique games is that they often don't sell well. (See Psychonauts or Shadow of the Colossus) So when a game like this comes out there is often a big push by these people to get that game out there, thinking if this sells well maybe a few less formulaic games will get made and the publishers will take a chance on original ideas. Considering the money and years that go into making a game, it's become an industry that thrives on sequels even more than the movie industry, and leaves little room for independent projects. But how do you try to persuade the gamers who are happy with their WWII shooters and MAddens? Well, apparently you make a video like you see above showing all the cool ways you can blow stuff and people up. They also were probably very cautious not to give away any of the story considering the only part of the story they show is what you can see in the demo. So what you have is a review trying to sell the game as literature-esque combined with video trying to sell the game to the masses.

Anyway, is this game literature-esque? No, and it is a tad ridiculous to try to put games in that category. Could they ever become high-minded? Not with the market and culture of gaming the way it is. Though a game like Shadow of the Colossus does give me hope. To me it is probably the greatest video game ever made because (Perhaps I should be ashamed to admit this) it was able to create a moment in its story where I got a bit misty eyed twice. I will defend that it is valid form of story telling. And now I'm finished with what is giving me flashbacks to me high school English persuasive speech: "Comic Books Aren't For Kids Anymore."

OK, because of the description of the game being (partially) based on Atlas Shrugged, I looked at the trailer for BioShock. This was so STRANGE. I wish you could listen to the reviewer w/o watching the scenes. He really does set this experience up as being fairly high-minded and, truly, thought-provoking (literature-esque). But THEN you see the images. While this guy is talking about Dostoevsky and Rand, you're seeing the game -- a guy's arm holding a wrench, beating a zombie with it. Then, as he's talking about how "most programmers don't bother with character build-ups, well, this game does" you see the main guy in a robot suit shooting a drill through a guy's chest.

I'm glad people (you, Brad) like games like this. There's something fun to it. But when the muckety-mucks making these things try to PRETEND like they're out to win Pulitzers, but are really making shoot-em-ups... well, it seems like quite the farce.

Again, I'm not against these games. Just the pretense that sometimes surrounds 'em.

Planet: Originally I was goign to go with Asia's Alpha, but upon closer inspection, I pick Yes' Relayer. It's cold, and actually does have life. At first I thought I'd starve on its icy land, but that snake looks like decent eating.

I've had physical therapy on the brain for a long time as a possible career after the kids are in school blah, blah, blah. I went with a friend to her physical therapy session and it was awesome. But now that I think about it that was specifically a place where they only did hand physical therapy. I never once considered the fact that I might have to touch someone's butt. This, I'm afraid, would be intolerable. I guess I'll have to specialize and that would probably mean that I'll never find a job and going back to college would be meaningless so . . . I guess I'll just send the kids to school and sit at home eating bon bons. Yay! Thanks, Brad!

I know you're tired of writing this, but I read it every time, now.

We watched last night. Agree most of the way around.

"Why doesn't the band dress up?" YES! You scratched an itch with that comment I had last night. They showed some girl in the band and I thought, "She looks really... um... normal?" Good call.

And, yeah, that star in the mall and that sign on the street are GONE. I think you can get 'em on eBay.

Wasn't Paula odder than usual?

I couldn't quit giggling whenever Melinda said "nutbush."

I think I'd hear of half the songs from last night.

I would watch any show Simon Cowell was a part of. He's like Ricky Gervais' grumpier cousin.

Man Brad, I have to admit, I felt let down by this movie. I didn't like 1) The impossible to follow Blair Witchy sequences 2) The heavy-handed "Green Zone" commentary (more zombies, please?) 3) That when the movie ended I thought that what I had seen had been a really long, clunky set-up for the movie I was expecting...and then the credits rolled.

Agreed, as well. That 'creation' scene was cool. Agreed, also, that the movie was an overstuffed mess. YES... just one bad guy, please. I thought the fight scenes were tiring. There's only so much you can do, flopping around in the air. Ultimately, I walked out going, "Huh. I waited in a long line and sat in uncomfortable seats for THAT?"

I don't know why but I love Ma Petrelli. I just know she's gonna have a kick-ass power. I think it would be funny if the crippled wife also had a power--like walking.

I was amused to see CTU security guards being slaughtered once again. They're the red shirts of the 24 world. But I actually (I am so embarrassed to say this) let out a scream when Milo got shot. Pathetic, I know. But at least the Nadia love triangle has been settled--that is if she and Ricky live. I'd prefer if they didn't.

And my question is--when are they finally going to reveal that Jack's nephew is actually his son?

Wow, and here I thought that the birds appeared every time the *girl* was near. My world is...just a little bit different because of that.

And yes, I did see Hot Fuzz!! I loved it. I squealed with glee and horror at the ridiculous amounts of gore. Sandra left the theater 'cause she didn't like it. But that was the first movie I've seen in a while that was worth it.

Obviously Karen liked the bird thing so some girls must be into it. I think it would depend on the kind of bird though. Vultures or birds of prey would definitely be a scary turn off. But little blue birds and chickadees might make you look sensitive and that's always a good thing.

I was there this weekend, Brad. For the Sunday evening sets. It was hot and under the influence. So many people on so many substances. Well, just pot and alcohol, really.

Saw Crowded House (the reason we were there) and Air.

Port-a-potties were crazy.

The side shows were interesting.

And Brad, this wasn't for you. Not your style. Not mine, either, except that somehow, I had fun anyways.
